IS Analysis

  • Hardware is the physical component of a device. Daiichi gives all of its employees Dell Laptops to do their work on.

2. (Nick)

  • CPU stands for Central Processing Unit. Three types of CPUs are Single core, Dual-core, and Quad-core. The CPUs we use are single-core Intel I7s. Types of CPU storage include primary storage, secondary storage, and tertiary storage and these are used to store data and programs. Daiichi Sankyo uses both primary storage, primarily the hard drives on our laptops, and cloud storage to allow us to store and share files.

  • Software is the programs and other operating information used by a computer. An operating system is the most important software that runs on a computer. It manages the computer’s memory and processes, as well as all of its software and hardware. Daiichi Sankyo uses the Microsoft Windows operating system.

4. (Nick)

  • Application software is a type of computer program that performs a specific personal, educational, and business function. An example of this is the suite of Microsoft products such as MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook.
  • A Vertical application is a piece of software designed to fit the needs of a specific market, industry, or company.
  • Horizontal applications cater to a broader field of customers and can extend across markets and are used in a range of industries. These do not usually offer market-specific features.
  • A Customized application is software that is developed specifically for some specific organization or other user. Businesses can make changes anytime they want, add important information, and implement feedback from customers.
  • Daiichi Sankyo’s IT department has developed a program called OPTIbot which will continuously optimize your computer to ensure the laptop works optimally. It can do things like clear Caches and empty the recycle bin to clear up storage.

  • Virtualization is a technology that you can use to create virtual representations of servers, storage, networks, and other physical machines. Virtual software mimics the functions of physical hardware to run multiple virtual machines simultaneously on a single physical machine.
  • 3 types of virtualization are full virtualization, para-virtualization, and OS-level virtualization.
  • To my knowledge Daiichi Sankyo does not use any virtualization for the Logistics process however if needed the IT department can implement it onto our laptops.

6. (Jeff)

  • Daiichi Sankyo uses no open-source software for the logistics process however we do use both Web-based and Native applications. For web-based applications, the supply chain team uses Anaplan to create charts and enter Supply planning data. Additionally, we use the ADP web application to handle payroll. As for Native applications we use the suite of Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Visio, and most importantly Outlook and Teams).

7. (Desi)

  • Daiichi Sankyo is looking to implement AI to help automate some of the supply chain processes. One of the potentials they have been looking to implement by 2027 is the automation of processing purchasing orders.

8. (Jeff) Does your company have a BYOD policy? What is it? Do they use MDM software? Should they?

  • Daiichi Sankyo does not have a BYOD policy for laptops, the only device allowed to connect to the network is the laptop provided to you by the company. For some employees, you are required to use your own phone however if you are eligible the company will provide you with a company phone. Daiichi Sankyo does use MDM software built into Outlook/Teams, whenever I try and connect to Outlook or Edge through my company account on my phone I get the message “your company is protecting their data”. I also cannot copy and paste anything from my email to messages.

9. (Desi)

  • A database is an organized collection of structured information, or data, typically stored electronically in a computer system and is usually controlled by a database management system. In a spreadsheet, data is stored in a cell and can be formatted, edited, and manipulated within that cell. In a database, cells contain records that come from external tables.

10. (Jeff)

  • Outlook allows you to organize your email via fields this is done by changing the color category of the email. SAP is also used to generate metadata. Honestly not sure how to answer this question Metadata Management | SAP Help Portal

11. (Desi)

  • A database management system (DBMS) is a software tool that enables users to manage a database easily. It allows users to access and interact with the underlying data in the database.

12. (Lauren)

  • Database applications are software programs that allow users to interact with databases and manage data. Daiichi Sankyo uses SAP to manage databases for the logistics process. (I cannot get screenshots as they'll get me in trouble due to containing sensitive data).

13. (Lauren)

  • Some of the new technologies for databases include cloud databases and open-source DBMS. The company can use more cloud-based databases which would help align us with global colleagues allowing them access to our databases instead of sending emails asking for information.

14. (Mike)

  • Lan is short for local area network and connects computers that reside in a single geographic location on the premises of the company that operates the LAN. The components are a router, switch, and wireless access point. You can connect to LAN in the office via USB C ports

15. (Mike)

  • The Internet is a network of networks and the domain name of the company is https://www.daiichisankyo.com/.

16. (Mike)

  • It’s a set of rules and data structures for organizing communication. Some important ones are FTP- A rule used to move files over the internet, IEE 802.3 - Used for wired LAN connections and Bluetooth- used to make PAN connections and designed for transmitting data over short distances and replacing cables. To my knowledge, the company uses FTP to transfer files throughout the network.

17. (Mike)

  • It is the elastic leasing of pooled computer resources over the Internet. A common example of clous is icloud.com where information is stored online. It’s important because it is a cheaper, faster, better quality way of data storage. Resources such as applications and data are accessible over the Internet.

18. (Jeff)

  • Daiichi Sankyo uses two types of cloud-based services. The first is a Microsoft shared folder built into the company's network as an IaaS. To connect to the folder you need to be on the VPN or in the office. To share files with Japanese Colleagues we use Box.com which is a SaaS cloud-based website that stores the files for us.

19. (Jeff)

  • In terms of safety on the networks, the IT team has made it difficult for others to connect/steal data. You have to be on the VPN to access the shared folder and database information. For recommendations I would hope to stop relying on One Drive to store files or allow users the option to not use it sometimes when I save a file it won't connect to the One Drive and I have to restart my computer for it to work again.
